The principal customs check posts or authorized customs routes through which border trade flows to Bangladesh from Assam are :-

(i) Sutarkandi,
(ii)
Dhubri,
(iii)
Mankachar and
(iv)
Golokanj.

Out of these, major share of exports goes through Sutarkandi land customs station. In view of that the Trade Center Sutarkandi project (1st phase) in Karimganj district of Assam has been approved by Govt. of India on 7th January 2000 under Critical Infrastructure Balance (C.I.B.) Scheme at a total project cost of Rs 8.16 Crores subject to the condition that the state Government of Assam provides the land for setting up of the Trade Centre at Sutarkandi and contributes 20% of the project cost, to provide appropriate infrastructural facilities to the exporters and importers of the region who are already engaged in import / export business with the neighbouring country of Bangladesh.

Location: Sutarkandi, Karimganj, Karimganj District.

Accessibility:

Air: Kumbhirgram, Silchar, 94 Kms.

Rail: Karimganj, 14 Kms.

Road: Connected by NH-151. Excellent road link with entire north Eastern states and rest of the country.

Date of Comencement of 1st phase work: 20-11-2002.

Objective:

To augment border trade with neighbouring country Bangladesh.
